FIELD OF SCHOLARSHIP: Contemporary British Literature

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:

Dr. Silvia Pellicer-Ortín is Lecturer at the Department of English and German Philology at the Faculty of Education of the University of Zaragoza (Spain). Before finishing her PhD thesis, Silvia Pellicer-Ortín was a Research Fellow at the Department of English and German Philology since January 2008 to December 2011, after obtaining a four-year national competitive fellowship (FPU) financed by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science in 2008. Silvia graduated in English Philology at the University of Zaragoza in June 2007, for which she was awarded the Extraordinary Degree Award in March 2009. In September 2008 she obtained the Master’s degree in Textual and Cultural Studies in English after defending with honours the MA thesis entitled: “Intertextuality and the Working Through of Trauma in Eva Figes’ Tales of Innocence and Experience”. And in March 2012 she defended with cum laude her PhD thesis (European Doctorate) on the work of the British-Jewish writer Eva Figes, for which she was awarded the Extraordinary PhD Award of the University of Zaragoza in March 2013. Silvia belongs to the ‘Excellent’ Research Team ‘Contemporary Narrative in English’ led by Prof. Susana Onega, and she has also been a Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Edinburgh, Cambridge and Reading (UK).

DETAILS OF RESEARCH:

Silvia’s main research interests lie in contemporary British fiction and semi-autobiographical genres, with a special focus on British-Jewish literature and British-Jewish women writers, the ethical and traumatic component in the writings of sexual and ethnic minorities, the Holocaust and the question of Jewishness, feminism, women and gender studies. She is also very interested and involved in questions concerning pedagogy and innovative teaching methods in high education. She has participated in a variety of national and international conferences delivering papers which deal with these topics, she has been invited to teach some seminars on Eva Figes and British-Jewish women writings in the Universities of Cambridge, Northampton and Newman College Birmingham (UK), and her articles have been published in scientific journals and books.
