ACADEMIA EUROPAEA - The Academy of Europe

Nominations and Election Process

Invitation to membership of the Academia by the Council follows a peer review process and confirmation as to the scholarship of the nominated individuals by each relevant section. Section recommendations are scrutinised by an independent Nominations Subcommittee.

The nomination process follows an annual cycle.

  • THE 2012/2013 NOMINATIONS CYCLE IS OPEN
  • Only existing members may propose new candidates for membership.

The system is designed to prevent nominations where all parties to the nomination originate from a single country.

The criteria for membership can be read here . You can also read the shorter Guidelines .

Nominations can be made in two ways:

1. Standard methods for nomination

  • Electronic submission. CLOSING DATE for submission is midnight on 31 May 2013. The procedures for electronic submission and the nomination form can be found here.
  • Alternatively, the 2013 form can be downloaded, saved and used from this link . The procedures for completing the form can be downloaded here . There are instructions also on the form itself.

2. The President's List

This is a specific mechanism. It is designed to capture those eminent scholars who, for whatever reason, have been overlooked in the past, or possible candiates who do not fit the normal criteria for membership. The criteria can be found here and the form of nomination is the same as for other nominations (select "President's list" as the Section category).

Evaluation of candidates

Section committees evaluate all candidates and make recommendations on suitablility for election to an independent Nominations Subcommittee. There are formal hearings, where the section chairs and Nominations Subcommittee members discuss all recommended candidates. In 2012 the hearings will take place on September 09-10, in Bergen. The Council of the Academia will then consider recommendations and elect new members at their meeting on 11th September. All, newly elected members will receive a formal invitation to accept membership from the President during October 2012 and an invitation to participate in the induction ceremony in the following year.
