Neuroinfection and COVID-19: new article by Luca Steardo, Robert Zorec and Alex Verkhratsky#

Luca Steardo, Robert Zorec and Alex Verkhratsky, members of the Physiology and Neuroscience section of Academia Europaea, have published a commentary entitled ‘Neuroinfection may contribute to pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of COVID-19’.

The article considers whether coronavirus may enter the central nervous system of humans and infect neural cells, and the possible neurological and psychiatric impacts of neuroinflammation.

The open access article has been published in Acta Physiologica, the official journal of the Federation of European Physiological Societies (FEPS).

Alex Verkhratsky is a Professor of Neurophysiology at the University of Manchester. Since 2012 he is Adjunct Director of Achucarro Basque Centre for Neuroscience in Bilbao. He became a member of the Academia Europaea in 2003 and in 2013 a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
